Ballpoint, Cholla cactus with inlays
Cholla cactus ‘skeleton’ inlaid
This is the skeleton of the cholla cactus, native to the Southwestern United States. It has been inlaid with crushed Turquoise, crushed red Coral, powdered black Jet, and copper. The idea for this pen came from memories of seeing Native American craftsmen create jewelry items when I traveled in Arizona and the Southwest as a young teenager. Their skills with these materials and silver were stunning. Much of the work was done with very basic tools. The satin copper of the fittings compliments these materials.

PRODUCT INFO
Like many finishes, CA (cyanoacrylate or 'Krazy Glue') finish is applied to the object while it spins on the lathe. At Penchant 4, as few as six or as many as twelve coats of CA can be applied to protect the decorative elements. It is then polished and buffed to a high gloss. CA is considered to provide a very durable finish; but it is not indestructible. Typically, CA finishes are only applied to wood or other organic materials.
